The first and second books of the Maccabees were part of the Latin Bible. In the Protestant Chruch they were not not included amongst the canonical books. But they are part of the Apocrypha, that is, books withdrawn from holy use.
The Jewish standard of judgement was accepted, and they did not form part of the Hebrew Bible.
The first Maccabees is a simple, direct, historical narrative of the forty years' struggle from 175 to 135 B.C., from the accession of Antiochus IV (Epiphanes) to the death of Simon, the youngest of the Maccabean brothers.
The Second book of the Maccabees covers part of the same period of history, but the record is more rhetorical and ornate.
This book contains I, II, III & IV Maccabees and Psalm 151.
